Working Out Maximum Demand

Max demand shopping centres and alike
VA per square metre eg 35 va /sq metre or as given by consultant
1017 sq metre floor area x 35 va / sq metere = 35,595 or 35.595Kva
√3 x Voltage (3 phase) x I = 35,595 or 1.732 x 415 x I = 35,595
Or I = 35,595 ÷ 1.732 x 415 = 49.52 Amps per phase

Single phase calc forget the √3 and adjust voltage to 240

Conduit Sizing

You have just completed a installation design calculated all the costings for a building predominantly built with concrete slabs and columns. When you order the the multi-core cables from your preferred supplier and find out they are not able to fulfill the order, your second choice is only able to offer cable manufactured by another company. The size of the cable is 20% thicker than that of the cable you had included in your installation. Two things will happen, you will need to redisign your whole installation including pricing and if there are hundreds of circuits there is a lot of editing to be done, which of course the software is capable of doing and you are going to be an unhappy camper.
If you are going to do a cable run in conduit solutions Electrical Software has the ability to give you the correct conduit size to your corresponding wiring regulations, for Insulated Unsheathed Single Core Cable and Insulated and Sheathed Single Core Cables. Different cable manufacturers use different cable specifications with their multi-core cables. The insulation thickness may vary as much as 20% for the same size conductors made by different cable manufacturers. With that in mind the program developer has chosen not to include multi-core cables in the conduit selection module.

Electric Loop

You have just purchased you new electrical design software, go ahead and install it on your computer and get started with some serious electrical drawings, so was it easy to build that electrical installation? Some of the electrical software packages on the market have all the bells and whistles and is very pretty and may come with a hefty price tag, problem may be you need a degree in IT just to use the software. Having trouble using it, no problems we'll just ring the tech support guys and have the issues sorted out in a couple of minutes MAYBE!
Solutions Electrical, are there for you the user of the software, with ongoing free phone and email support, but we have decided to not stop there. Now the owners of our software have full access to a dedicated website complete with forum, demonstartion videos, downloads and information, of course membership is free to users and available 24/7.

NICEIC

No Solutions Electrical Software is not a member of the niceic Solutions Electrical Software does however comlpy with bs7671 wiring regulations.

Cable Operating Temperature Insulation Degradation

Ok so you have just created a new small electrical installation with your preferred electrical software, whether you have used AS/NZS 3000:2007 or bs 7671 you have used all the correct cable de-rating factors to produce a wonderful fault free electrical design, and yes it does meet all the electrical wiring regulations. Does this software include your cable operating temperature. My reason for asking is: You may have 3,4,5 or more circuits running in a trunk on a tray or in a duct all bunched together and as i have already stated complied with the de-rating factors as laid out by your particular country's wiring regulations. Lets us say, you have different cables bunched together, for instance you may have mineral insulated metal sheaved, a V75 and a V90 this is where you may run into trouble.
The full load operating temperature of the V90 is 83.6 Degrees is there a possibility of the V75 (because times are a bit tight you have chosen to use the lightest allowable cable for the run with an operating temperature for the V75 being 73 degrees) exceeding it's recommended maximum operating temperature and resulting in Cable Insulation Degradation and I am sure you know the potential hazards faced in this situation. Therefore I would be inclined to say the cable operating temperature is definately an important consideration when choosing your electrical software.

It's Only Mathematics

We are often asked, "How are the cable size calculations performed" and often I find myself stumped trying to answer this question and rather than try to explain something I am not entirely sure of, I would prefer to show our readers the mathematical formula which John Wood has used as the base of all our calculations. For those interseted, take a look at the cable size calculations I am sure you will find it quite interesting. If you can work it please let me know.
